Struggling to
kickstart your
micro business?
The Truth.
Many micro businesses could really struggle to survive over the next few years. The digitally savvy and those with true grit have the best chance of flourishing by the time the economy starts getting better. Perhaps the economy will get better by 2025 or maybe only by 2030. Who knows. Best to get your mind ready to grind for years to come. So, in an effort to give you the most basic but also most affordable option to compete long term online I have created this page. Yes, I sell websites and I am biased towards actually having a website for your micro business. Honestly, I am not sure how you expect to build a digital footprint without a website. And, by the way, my website special is kinda hard to beat. Anyhoo. Be warned. There is no quick fix. If you’re in a panic to get more clients, I have no advice for you. Many people overestimate what they can accomplish in a year and underestimate what they can achieve in ten years. Most high yielding short term gains is probably illegal anyways. And I don’t recommend doing illegal stuff. Alrighty then. Let’s get cracking!

The simplest way to get “cracking” online is to create your Google Business Profile aka GBP, and it’s free… plus it helps people find you online. You really don’t need a fancy website with lots of pages. One page is enough. As far as Facebook is concerned, I spend time on Facebook but I mostly don’t know what the hell I am supposed to be doing there. Seems everybody trying to get clients on Facebook is desperate (Maybe I am wrong about that but yeah, I am not convinced Facebook gets you any clients). But I have a Facebook Business Profile that I keep updated and I post useful information to Facebook Groups. I rarely try to sell my services on Facebook. There must be a million people on Facebook just in South Africa trying to selling websites. I’d rather post content my potential clients could use.
Simply posting, “Need an electrician?” on Facebook over and over isn’t very effective. To stand out from your competition, it helps if you can prove to the world online that you’re an expert. Constantly strive to get better and better at what you do. Consider sharing insights about your trade & industry. Help people save money. We are all very tired & moeg of adverts and spam calls etc. Be helpful. Be useful. It’ makes you look professional.
Single-Page Website + Google Business Profile (GBP) 🍗
For service-area businesses (those that earn money offline), the combination of a single-page website and a well-maintained Google Business Profile (GBP) is what you need to create a long term digital footprint that pays dividends. Here is the specific formula:
1. Add Microdata Schema Markup to your Website
Schema markup is special but simple coding creating by Bing+Yahoo+Google. Its a special coding library that helps search engines better understand your website. It’s not just about visibility—schema provides specific instructions to search engines on how to interpret your page. For micro businesses, using microdata schema markup across the single-page website is crucial because it gives your content extra context, improving how search engines interpretation of the website. Think of it as adding a layer of clarity, ensuring that the browser and search engines know exactly what your business offers.
For example, when you get a positive Google Review, make sure to use review microdata schema markup to display your positive Google Reviews directly on your website. These slow, steady streams of reviews not only improve your Google Profile but add social proof that builds trust with visitors.
2. Leverage Your GBP Category
The Google Business Profile category you choose plays an important role in how your business is discovered. It impacts the keywords associated with your business, and these keywords should be strategically embedded in your microdata schema if possible and also on your website. Choose the most accurate category, and wherever possible, weave these keywords into your page content. This alignment makes sure that Google recognizes your website and GBP as tightly related, which boosts your local SEO. When your business category and website content are in sync, Google has a clearer understanding of what you offer.
Micro Business Oriented Web Design
The majority of first-time visits to a website is from a smart phone.
1. Mobile-First Design
Since your visitors will likely be on mobile, your single-page site should be designed for scrolling. Visitors naturally scroll from top to bottom. You know you do it too. It’s important to design with this in mind, offering answers to key questions as the visitor scrolls down:
- What do you do?
- How do you do it?
- Who are you?
- Who has used your services?
By organizing your page like a story, you guide your visitors through each section, answering questions and keeping them engaged. If you can’t convince them in that first, mobile-focused experience, they’re unlikely to return.
2. Website Scrolling Psychology
When visitors arrive to your website, the first thing they ask is: “Am I in the right place?” Your headline must instantly reassure them. For example, if you’re a plumber, your headline should read “Professional Plumbing Services”—no room for ambiguity. This clarity builds trust right from the start.
Don’t rely on menus at the top of the page. If you have a design that relies on a mouse hovering over an image… it won’t work on mobile. Instead, design each section to flow naturally into the next, answering the key questions might visitors have along the way. By the time they reach the end, they should feel confident in your services.
Quick Recap
- Schema Markup: Ensures search engines understand your content.
- GBP Category: Aligns your business’s core services with search queries.
- Single-Page Design: Reduces friction and provides all the necessary info upfront.
A Few Tricks
-
Google Reviews and Photos Matter: Regular updates with work-in-progress photos (action shots) are more effective than just finished projects. Authenticity matters.
-
Footer Menu Importance: The footer is the final stop for many mobile users. Make sure it contains useful links and clear contact information—like the last chapter of a book, it leaves a lasting impression.
-
Avoid Unnecessary Features: Forget fancy hover effects or complicated navigation. Focus on simplicity and making sure the page functions smoothly on mobile.
Now What?
What I have shared with you is the basics. Will it get you more clients? Well that depends. Is your local competiton getting more Google Reviews than you? Do they offer a better service than you? In your heart, you will know why you succeed or fail. One thing is certain, if you don’t do the digital basics for your micro bsuiness, you’re making it much harder to succeed. (You might have noticed I am not a fan of Facebook or Instagram or TikTok aka TikkleTokkle. Ja nee, good luck with that mess. Seems on social media you either have to pay money for adverts or act like a clown to go viral… But you’re welcome to prove me wrong).
